Incidents, critical conditions in the network - when emergency power supply is required
In a wastewater and purification plant, electricity is absolutely necessary for the operation of the processes. Since wastewater and water supply is a daily routine for the citizen, and is expected to function even in the event of a power failure, a backup power supply is required.
Instead of the aging diesel generators, a sustainable battery storage system with extensive energy management (grid manager) included in the scope of services is used. For this purpose, the emergency power distribution system was fundamentally revised. Not only is the sewage treatment plant resupplied; the concept also allows the provision of emergency power for third parties and opens up completely new service concepts for the energy supplier, which acts as operator within the framework of emergency power contracting.
The lithium-ion battery storage system, which weighs almost 10 tons and has an output of 300 kW, was seamlessly integrated into the existing building. The storage unit enables data exchange with the control system of the ARA, the combined heat and power plant (CHP), the gas tank, the photovoltaic system and various circuit breakers and measuring devices. Messages about the status, malfunctions and the current output are automatically sent to the storage unit, and the systems are integrated into the emergency power supply in this way. Conversely, the storage system sends signals about its status and can regulate the connected plants in stages.
"What is special about the project is that we not only supply emergency power for our customer, i.e. the wastewater treatment plant, but we were also able to include the existing production facilities, the combined heat and power plant and the photovoltaic systems. This is something new for our industry," says the managing director of Energie AG, which is primarily responsible for the design and project management.
Supplied for several days from the battery storage system
The battery storage system not only ensures the emergency power supply for all important processes, but also enables dynamic load management. In emergency operation, the CHP and the PV system are switched on for support, thus enabling a grid-independent power supply for several hours to days.
At the moment, the storage system supplies five emergency power outlets and has further capacity. "An ingenious and exciting project! It's always great to see how such a comprehensive concept is created and implemented from an initial idea," says the project manager.
Conclusion: hybrid gas-to-power solutions consisting of gas engines and battery storage are efficient solutions for smaller and largerutilities or independent power plant operators to expand operational flexibility in addition to power-to-heat and heat storage.
